About Us

We are Amy and Chris, parents of 4 children, learning by living, taking an adventure that many of our friends and family think is crazy… even if they secretly envy us. We do not shy away from adventure & trying new things but even this is not what we would have imagined just a few years ago.

We’ve lived in a few different states in our family life. Our last home was a townhouse, in an HOA neighborhood, in Mesa, Arizona where Amy learned how to keep a “pretty” vegetable garden. Both Amy and Chris connected with urban farmers & the desire to grow our own food and have chickens became more of a question of “how can we make this work” rather than “should we try it”? We made our final move looking for a home where we could legally have chickens and space for a garden and we found a slice of heaven on just more than 5 acres in Kentucky.

Our Homestead Adventures blossomed naturally in the first year on our property. We went from planting a garden to adding an orchard, designing and building a chicken coop and now… well that’s where the real adventure begins. During our Thanksgiving meal we got to thinking about how grateful we were to live in a place that allowed us to experience some of life’s simple pleasures and biggest challenges, a place that allowed us to try and provide and be self-reliant. The conversation turned into a “what if” session and the question/challenge: “what if our next Thanksgiving meal included only things that we provided for ourselves?”

In our first year, our property inspired us to do things we’d never tried before and we tasted success. As our family of 6 grows, so does our grocery bill. The idea of providing for ourselves is so appealing for the budget and for our health. Amy suffers from a wheat sensitivity that causes internal inflammation. We have fruits, vegetables, eggs, & meat available to us without having to run to the store & these options are all good for us!

We’ve spent a lot of time talking to experts, reading blogs and watching videos from others who had tried the things we found interesting. Now it’s time for us to share our experiences and Our Homestead Adventures in an effort to entertain, educate and, maybe, just maybe, inspire.

We’ll be sharing our gardening, animals, recipes, & farm life with you, along with resources to help you get growing too!
